Transport for London

The body of work we have done for Transport for London encompasses over 200 projects, of which we are enormously proud. It has involved all modes of transport, such as Tube, cycling, buses, tram and even walking. The diversity of the briefs, from campaigns to information design, radio ads to face-to-face activity has brought about new challenges and exciting outcomes. Seeing our work on our daily commute is an added bonus.

When working with a local government body that is responsible for most aspects of the transport system for Greater London, all disciplines within design and marketing need to be considered. Not only do the campaigns and communication need to be iconic but they need to be universal, especially when considering such a wide range of messaging.

Audience perspective

Understanding the diversity of your audience is critical to the success of public transport projects. In London, English is not always a first language, so accessibility is important. Our designs needed to communicate the message at a glance, and be simple yet engaging. We also delivered a project delivering TfL’s accessibility products.

But we’ve worked more than just the serious stuff. As the London travel network is also the conduit to exploring the Capital we’ve promoted events, celebrations and history aplenty. From the colour and vivid street celebrations of Notting Hill to the dancing Dragons of China town and little known places waiting to be discovered, we’ve been there, done that.

Making a difference to everyday lives

Whatever the project our work had a direct impact on the lives on Londoners.

Missing a night bus home can be more than just an inconvenience. For a lone passenger it can be a safety issue too. We were very conscious of this when working on projects such as night bus timetable posters, making them easy to understand. Making sure passengers got on the right Tube to Heathrow is also a responsibility. It could mean the difference between making or missing a flight.

Our role of making information accessible has been crucial, whether it be clear updates on works and closures or easy to read maps, diagrams and timetables. For the tram network we rode the tram for two days, visiting every stop. This gave us a feel for what it was like to be a commuter, parent or a user with accessibility issues. We recorded our findings in a diary against which we will be able to reference all future work.

The experience of working for Transport for London was rewarding in so many ways – from the variety of the projects, building great relationships with the client team, working in a multi-agency environment, and having fun along the way.
